The Ottawa Catholic School Board proudly serves the community by offering a wide variety of Continuing and Community Education programs and courses. The Continuing Education Department has on-going requirements for contract instructors and teachers within the various programs. These programs are as follows: the General Interest Program, the English As A Second Language Program (ESL), Night School Credit Program, the International Languages Program (Elementary and Credit), and the Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program.

LITERACY AND BASIC SKILLS INSTRUCTOR

Under the supervision of the Administrator, the instructor is responsible for the instruction of learners in Literacy and Basic Skills instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. University degree and additional training/experience in teaching adults 2. Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Certification OR 3. Registration with the Ontario College of Teachers and holding a Certificate of Qualification or an Interim Certificate of Qualification plus appropriate additional qualification course (i.e. Special Education Part I, Reading Part I, Adult Education, etc.) 4. Appropriate Master's degree with specialization in adult literacy and/or numeracy 5. Equivalent qualifications to the above as determined at the discretion of the program management
Candidates will be selected on the basis of their qualifications and experience, and tests may be administered to determine levels of proficiency. As per the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, program guidelines and expectations such as assessment levels for literacy and numeracy, training plan development and experience with Essential Skills are key assets.
The salary for this position is $34.07 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay and 3.8% statutory holiday pay). The position is 20 hours per week (Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.).

International Languages Program (Elementary) Instructors
Candidates must have knowledge of and fluency of the international language. Previous teaching experience would be considered an asset. Please note, this position runs for 2.5 hours on Saturday mornings. In accordance with Board Policy, an acceptable Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector and a negative tuberculin test (obtained within the last 12 months) will be required as a condition of employment.

Qualifications of instructors and teachers vary within each program. To assist you in identifying potential areas of interest, programs and qualifications are described below.
General Interest Program Instructors give classes and workshops in a variety of areas including craft making, fitness, cooking, babysitting, computer courses and many more. You are requested to call Continuing Education at 228-3338 and ask for a course submission form in order to outline the course you would like to offer.
Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Program prepares adults for further education, training and re-entry to the workplace and enables them to be contributing members in our society. This program provides a variety of locations and day and evening schedules to meet the needs of adults in our region. The Literacy and Basic Skills program delivery services focus on people who are unemployed, with a special emphasis on social assistance recipients. The program is, however, also open to employed Ontarians who need to improve their literacy skills in order to maintain or upgrade their work skills.
Qualifications for Level 1 include: a) University degree and additional training/experience in teaching adults b) Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Certification.
Qualifications for Level 2 include: a) Registration with the Ontario College of Teachers and holding a Certificate of Qualification or an Interim Certificate of Qualification plus appropriate additional qualification course (i.e. Special Education Part I, Reading Part I, Adult Education, etc.) b) Appropriate Master's degree with specialization in adult literacy and/or numeracy c) Equivalent qualifications to the above as determined at the discretion of the program management.
International Languages Program (Elementary) Instructors provide children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 with opportunities to maintain or learn a language not otherwise available during the regular school day. Language instruction is provided in the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bulgarian, Burmese,Cantonese, Croatian, Czech; Dutch, Estonian, German, Hungarian, Igbo, Italian, Korean, Mandarin, Persian, Pilipino, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swahili, Tigrinia, Turkish, and Yoruba. These programs are taught on Saturdays for 2.5 hours per day on a semester basis.
Qualifications: Proficiency in the International Language and one or more of the following: a) recognized university degree b) Registration with the Ontario College of Teachers and holding a Certificate of Qualification or an Interim Certificate of Qualification or qualifications in language acquisition or teaching c) approved course in International Languages, such as Instructor in-service courses offered by Ontario School Boards d) equivalent qualifications and experience, as determined at the discretion of the program management
International Languages Program (Credit) offers language classes, other than English and French, to regular day secondary school students and adults requiring language credits towards a high school diploma. These courses run on Saturdays for 3.5 hours per day on a semester basis. Language instruction is provided in the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Dutch, German, Italian, Korean, Panjabi, Persian, Pilipino, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.
Qualifications include proficiency in the language being instructed, registration with the Ontario College of Teachers and holders of a Certificate of Qualification or an Interim Certificate of Qualfication in the Intermediate/Senior area.
The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) is offered throughout the region to immigrants, refugees, refugee claimants and citizens. In addition to language acquisition, the school board also provides skills training through the ESL classes in areas such as computers, sewing, home daycare and personal home support care as well as ESL for academic purposes.
Qualifications: Proficiency in the English language plus one or more of: a) university degree plus approved ESL Certification b) registration with the Ontario College of Teachers and holding a Certificate of Qualification or an Interim Certificate of Qualification plus approved ESL courses c) university degree plus Masters in either education or language acquisition d) proven skills in skills-related programming in addition to experience working with adult immigrants e) equivalent qualifications and experience as determined at the discretion of the program management
