HOW WE KNOW WE ARE SUCCEEDING
Assessing Student Progress
The provincial assessment of Reading, Writing, and Mathematics conducted by EQAO for all students in grades 3 and 6 took place in May 2009. Students were assigned a score between level 1 (the lowest) and level 4 (the highest). Students performing at levels 3 or 4 meet provincial expectations. The school results over time are depicted in the graphs below. Provincial data is provided in the table for comparative purposes. Test results should be examined in the context of additional factors, such as other achievement indicators, the percentage of students in English as a Second Language programs, the percentage of students receiving special education support, socioeconomic factors and parental support. Detailed information about this assessment is available at the school.

A variety of methods are used to assess student performance at the classroom level, including teacher observation, self and peer evaluation, projects, portfolios, presentations, and classroom tests.
PRESERVING OUR SCHOOL HISTORY - LAST YEAR IN REVIEW
The staff and students at Guardian Angels participate in an ongoing project to raise our moral intelligence. Children are asked to STOP, THINK and CHOOSE as they go about their school day. This program encourages children to make good choices, to show empathy and base their choices on mutual respect. Parent involvement is key as the children learn to talk about their actions and choices and the consequences applied through the school.
Other exciting projects include the continuation of our computer integration through the LeadIt program. This provides for the integration of wireless, laptop computers in the classroom. We are also using the school data from E.Q.A.O. and other testing sources to implement an action plan created to target students not currently achieving the provincial standard.

More About Our Students/ School Achievement
|
 |
At Guardian Angels we believe it is important to recognize student achievement, participation and excellence. Public speaking is important for all students and we promote the improvement of this lifelong skill by recognizing students who participate in school-wide public speaking. Our school community also believes it is important for students to excel in group environments. Therefore, we recognize student involvement through Recognition Assemblies. Our Earn Your Wings Program promotes positive behaviour in the school. All students participate in our school-wide Stop, Think & Choose program to ensure yard safety and mutual respect. In concert with our School Council we have established a system of awards and recognition of student achievement in a variety of areas. We believe in the importance of children being involved in their own assessment. Portfolio assessment and student-led conferencing are key components of student learning. In 2007-2008 our school plan for learning will focus on improved writing skills, specifically non-fiction writing.
